Overview
During 1961, the Amalgamated Tobacco Corporation, Ltd., via their “Mills” cigarettes brand, issued their first of two series of “Histoire de L’Aviation” (History of Aviation) airplane cigarette card sets.
These two sets of airplane cards were aimed at the French speaking market with French text on the card reverse.
The first set, 1961 Histoire de L’Aviation, Une Premiere Serie de 25
with cards 1-25, was assigned the World Tobacco Issues Index designation of A46-55-1.
The first set tracks the history of manned flight starting with the 1783 flight of the Mongolfier Brothers balloon, up through the de Havilland D.H.88 Comet winning the 1934 “MacRobertson Race” from England to Australia.
This second set, 1962 Histoire de L’Aviation, Une Seconde Serie de 25
, the more difficult of the two sets to collect, continues the series with cards 26-50, and was assigned the World Tobacco Issues Index designation of A46-55-2.
This second set starts off with both passenger and fighter biplanes, progresses through World War II aircraft, and introduces the jet age with passenger, bomber and jet fighters.
The last card gives a peek into the future with a 1962 perception of manned space travel.
(Perhaps someone should tell SpaceX about this!)
For both sets, the colorful card fronts are presented in both landscape and portrait formats.
For being rather small cards, 67.5 × 36.3 mm, the artwork in both sets is well presented and quite appealing. It should also be noted that the artwork from the two sets was also used on numerous other tobacco and food issues card sets during this era.
The following reference card shows the fronts and backs of a typical 1962 Histoire de L’Aviation, Une Seconde Serie de 25
(A46-55-2) card.
