Aircraft Spotter Series Allied and Enemy Planes (134K) ITC Sweet Caporal Cigarettes (C271A) Canada
Background During World War II, the Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada Ltd. issued a series of airplane Trading Cards titled Aircraft "Spotter" Series - Allied and Enemy Planes. These cards were issued as part of several Sweet Caporal Cigarettes package designs. There appears to have been four basic package design/sizes, with multiple series on two of the sizes. The total number of cards in these multiple series has yet to be determined. However, to date, the known number of card-image/card-number combinations is 134. There are two unnumbered Aircraft Markings cards, and a series of 128 Airplanes cards numbered from 1 to 66. The first 55 of these silhouettes cards are easier to collect than the cards numbered from 56 through 66, which are extremely difficult to acquire.
Size Matters There appears to have been at least six printings of these cards ... with six different checklists. To date, we have been able to catalog 134 card-number/image combinations. These are all shown below in the "Image-Guide." We have also been able to catalog a total of six printing series: There were two series of 84x75mm cards; two series of 92x75mm cards; one 102x75mm card series; and one 115x75mm card series. Examples of the six series are as follows:

The American Card Catalog number for this series is C271A. There is a second series, C271B which is seldom seen. This 66 card series is similar to the first series and includes the text in both English and French on the front of the card. Series Packaging We are pleased to share these images of a typical C271A Sweet Caporal Aircraft "Spotter" Series cigarette package "sleeve." The "sleeve" is a glued rectangular box without top or bottom flaps. The cigarettes were most likely packaged in some sort of a wrapper and then inserted into the sleeve. The "sleeve" we are showing is one of the 25s Packs with the 102 x 75 mm card attached. Using the "Sweet Caporal Cigarettes ... Kinney Bros" as the front of the package, the left flap says "Sweet Caporal", the right flap gives the manufacturer information in both English and French, the Back side of the package contains the aircraft card. These complete packages are considered to be the "Holy Grail" for C271A collectors. They are extremely rare, and even rarer in the higher grades. Serious collectors of this series should have at least one of these cards for reference.
