Carnation's Airplane Trade Card Sets - Overview
During the past several years, there has been some confusion about who actually issued the Carnation Airplane Trade Cards sets (Albers or Carnation?), and the composition of Carnation's F270 series of Aircraft Recognition Cards sets.
The following envelope indicates that the Albers Milling Company was responsible for the Carnation Corn Flakes product line and thusly the issuer for Carnation's Aircraft Recognition Cards (F270) series.
The interest in this set peaked circa 2015, when veteran non-sports airplane card collector Albert B. Al Kramer discovered the previously unknown red livery Douglas D558-2 Skyrocket card. At the time of its discovery, the red livery Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket card was thought to be an orphan card (i.e. a unique or test card not belonging to any known trade card set).
However, research during the first five months of 2016 conducted by Pete D'Luhosch of PJD Enterprises, and veteran non-sports airplane trade card collector John Shupek of Skytamer Images, documented the existence of five distinct F270 Carnation Airplane Trade Card Sets, with five distinct checklists, and 211 individual cards, including the previously unknown red livery Douglas D558-2 Skyrocket and the North American T-28 Advanced Trainer (straight vertical stabilizer) cards.
Each of the five individual sets is easily distinguishable by the configuration of the card corners, the number of branding lines on the card's reverse, and the size of the 3-view image on the backside of the card. The key recognition points for each of the five sets is shown on the F270 Overview page.
1952 Airplane Recognition Cards, Set 2 (F270-2)
This square cornered 42-card set of airplane trade cards, is Carnation's 2nd set of Aircraft Recognition Cards. The title for this 2nd set has morphed from Airplane Flash Cards, Set 1 (F270-1), into Aircraft Recognition Cards, Set 2 (F270-2).
This 2nd set corrects the errors in the two Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket cards from the original Airplane Flash Cards, Set 1 (F270-1) set (see F270-1) and introduces the Douglas D-558 Skystreak card in place of the red livery Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket card. Airplane Recognition Cards, Set 2 (F270-2) also makes sure that the 3-view drawings on the backs of these cards are consistent with the aircraft configuration shown on the card fronts.
However, this set does contain another error card, the North American AJ-1 Attack Bomber card. The security notice Silhouette Drawings Classified, on the card back is horizontally flipped 180° to form a mirror image.
This error was eventually corrected in Carnation's Aircraft Recognition Cards, Set 3 (F270-3) 42-card set with the large radius corners. We believe that these cards were distributed in Carnation Corn Flakes cereal boxes, but have no proof of such.
The key features of this set are shown below.
This 42-card (F270-2) square corner set has only one error card and several typo cards that really annoy airplane people. The anomalies are as follows:
Note:Typos 1 through 5 are systemic throughout all five of the Carnation Airplane Card sets. The North American AJ-1 Attack Bomber error card is corrected in Set 3 (F270-3), the large radius rounded corners 42-card set.
The fronts of the 42 unnumbered Aircraft Recognition Cards, Set 2 (F270-2) all feature American-built aircraft. Forty one of the 42 cards are presented in a landscape (horizontal) format and show the aircraft in flight. One of the cards, the Convair XF-92 Delta Wing is presented in a portrait (vertical) format and shows the aircraft on the ground.
The backs of the cards are presented in a portrait format and feature the following vertical stack: (1) The card title; (2) A brief description of the aircraft; (3) A 3-view OML (outer mold line) drawing of the aircraft; and (4) The single branding line of CARNATION CORN FLAKES at the bottom of the card.
As noted above, the cards have square corners and a single line of Carnation branding.

A Very Special Thanks!
We would like to extend a very special thanks to Pete D'Luhosch, of PJD Enterprises for providing us with 600-dpi color scans of the fronts and backs of all of the cards in this unnumbered 42 card set of Aircraft Recognition Cards, Set 2 (F270-2) square cornered cards by Carnation Corn Flakes. Without Pete's help, this set of airplane cards would never have been properly documented. Be sure to visit Pete's website at PJD Enterprises.
