Overview
During the time-frame between 1953-56, the Palmer Mann & Company, Ltd., Sandbach, Cheshire, England, issued a series four different sets of package design trading cards. The cards were issued via their Sifta Sam’s salt products. The following four sets were issued: (1) Famous Cricketers (PAJ-1) 24-PD cards; (2) Famous Footballers (PAJ-2) 24 package design cards; (3) Famous Jets (PAJ-3) 12-PD cards; and (4) Famous Lighthouses 12-PD cards.
The 12-card set of Famous Jets (PAJ-3) featured British jet aircraft circa 1953-56. The cards were part of a package design set printed on Sifta Sam salt containers. Card collectors had to physically cut-out the airplane cards from the container. This is the reason that you usually see mis-cut or poorly trimmed cards. As far as the difficulty of obtaining a well-trimmed full-set of PAJ-3 Famous Jets airplane cards, the difficulty is probably a solid 8 out of 10. When properly trimmed, these blank backed cards measure approximately 70 × 32 mm, and are assigned the British Trade Index № PAJ-3.
The card fronts of the Famous Jets series feature color drawings in dark blue and pinky-red ink on a white background. The cards are subject to aging as shown in the above drawing. Due to aging, card fronts with pure-white backgrounds are difficult to find. The backs of the cards are blank. Some of the card backs are found with the overlap glue joint.
The following computer enhanced reference card shows the fronts and backs of a typical 1953-56 Famous Jets (PAJ-3) card as it might have originally appeared without aging.
