Background — A Little History About Marigold Ice Cream Company
During the 1940s, the Marigold Ice Cream Company was located at 113 6th Street, Oregon City, Oregon. We’ve performed numerous Google searches in an attempt to to determine the history of the Marigold Ice Cream Company, but came up with zero results. We also did a Google Earth search using their Street View option, and were able to look at a building which was most likely the Marigold Ice Cream Company durning the 1940s. It appears that the old Marigold Ice Cream Company building is now occupied by the Elks Club and the Pacific Crest Grand Ballroom. If anyone can help us with a little history about the Marigold Ice Cream Company, your inputs would certainly be appreciated. Use the Contact Us link to the left.
Overview
During 1940s, Marigold Ice Cream Company issued a 35-card set of “Aeroplanes” food product premium trading cards that were issued with their ice cream products. The cards measure 3.50 × 2.35 inches (88.90 × 57.15 mm). This was obviously an unauthorized set issued without the permission of the Whitman Publishing Company. The Marigold card images are doctored copies of the cards used in the 1941 Whitman’s CARD-O: “ZOOM - The Airplane Card Game, Set 2”. The main difference between the Marigold and the Whitman sets is the card numbers were removed on the Marigold cards leaving two white blank spaces and the card title. The other significant difference between the two sets is the Marigold cards were printed on low quality heavy paper stock, while the Whitman cards were printed on high-quality PLC playing card stock. The backs of the individual Marigold cards were all hand stamped with Marigold Ice Cream Company advertising copy. Since the backs of the Marigold cards were hand stamped, we’re assuming that the cards were not printed directly for the Marigold Ice Cream Company, but rather by a local printing company that offered these airplane card sets to various companies as advertising promotions. An example of the Marigold vs. Whitman sets is shown below. Click on the images to enlarge.

Marigold Ice Cream Company Aeroplanes Waxed Paper Envelope
It appears that the Marigold Ice Cream Company’s Aeroplanes 35-card set was issued as a complete set rather than as individual cards. The Skytamer set of 35 cards was obtained with the following heavy-duty waxed paper envelope. There may have been some sort of advertising copy on the outside surface of the envelope, however, this detail seems to be lost to history.
