Set Overview
During 1940, Gum, Inc., located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, issued their iconic Superman Gum
set of 72 bubble gum trade cards. The set’s card fronts show Superman performing a wide variety of heroic deeds, ranging from saving children, to saving a Navy Destroyer from a torpedo attack.
The sets card fronts feature color artwork of the same ilk as that of the 1940s DC Superman comics. The card backs include the card number, card title, descriptive text, and advertising.
The cards are presented in a landscape format with card dimensions of 79.8 × 62.8 mm. The set’s American Card Catalog number is R145.
As a side note, if you plan to collect this set, particularly the high-grade cards, expect to spend hundreds of dollars per card. This set is one of the rarer non-sports card sets.
You might want to start off with a repro set to use it as a filler set, and later add original cards to the set as you obtain them.
