Overview [1,2]
This set of 100 cards was issued in 1956, by Gum Products, Inc., and contains a wide variety of subject matter. Unfortunately for “non-sports” card collectors, it also contains many cards of athletes, of which the “boxer” series have received the most attention in recent times. The color artwork of the set does not compare well with other sets of the period, and the text is far too general. In some cases the text is just plain wrong; i.e. “Card № 39: One Down --- Zeros to Go” claims that Yamamoto was shot down in 1953 rather than 1943. The color drawings are printed on heavy cardboard stock and have large white borders. The cardboard stock is also rather brittle, that we unfortunately found out while scanning some of the cards. The backs contain the card number, card title, and a short text of blue print on gray stock. The American Card Catalog reference number for the set is R749.
Image-Guide [2]
The following R749 1956 “Adventure” Image-Guide contains images for the fronts and backs of all 100 cards in the set. All of the scans came from the Skytamer Collection except for cards #41, #44, and #86 which were obtained from outside anonymous sources. All of the images, both fronts and backs, have been computer enhanced for presentation purposes. Behind each of the thumbnails presented below is a “full-size” 600 dpi image (except 41, 44 & 86 which are low resolution scans). We have also included an “Original Scans” section directly beneath the Image-Guide that contains the original front and back 600-scans of the 97 cards from the Skytamer Collection.
