Overview

The Kerr’s Butter Scotch Airplane Pictures (R9) card series is by far one of the most challenging airplane card sets to acquire. Even though the set is assumed to contain only 24 cards with 23 airplane images, the chance of collecting a full-set is extremely difficult. Most of the R9 cards seen today are usually sub-quality cards, with many quality issues. The higher-grade cards seem to be extremely scarce.

The Airplane Pictures (R9) card set was issued in 1940 by the Kerr’s Butter Scotch, Inc., Brooklyn, New York, USA. The Airplane Pictures card set was a clever design that had collectors hunting for key letter cards rather than numbered cards. The cards contained a capitalized key letter located in the lower right-hand corner on the card back. The object was to collect cards that spelled out the company’s name - KERRS BUTTER SCOTCH. This turned out to be a not-so-easy-task. The frustrating thing about this set’s checklist has yet to be validated.

It appears that the only way to validate the checklist, is to have the cards in hand that spell out Kerr’s Butter Scotch. Jeff Alexander’s House of Checklists shows the set containing 23 cards, which includes the Lockheed XP-38 (S) card. The Lockheed XP-38 (S) card is not listed on the Network 54 Vintage Non-Sports Cards Chat Board. However, the Network 54 Vintage Non-Sports Cards Chat Board website reports that there are two Boeing B-17 cards, one with the key letter (K) and the other with the key letter (U). We do not know whether or not the two Boeing B-17 cards are identical, except for the two Key letters of K and U. Be that as it may, the combination of these two checklists brings the total number of cards to 24. Logically, only 17 cards are needed to complete the set. However, duplicate key numbers do appear in the known cards. A cross-reference table of key numbers versus known aircraft cards are shown below. The cards themselves measure 38 × 53 mm. The American Card Catalog designation for the set is R9.
