History [1]

Tip Top Bakeries is an Australasian manufacturer of bread products owned by George Weston Foods, a subsidiary of multinational food giant Associated British Foods. Tip Top® Bakeries was formed in 1949 when George Weston (Australia) Pty Ltd acquired two Australian bakeries. These were the Sydney based, publicly listed Gartrell White Limited, the largest baker in Australia and Golden Crust Bakery of Adelaide, the largest bakers in South Australia. Over the years, Tip Top Bakeries have acquired, built and rebuilt bakeries in Queensland, Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

The initial logo for Tip Top was in the shape of a shield with a red and blue background, and white writing, but the go morphed over the years to reflect the times, and has now become the shape of Australia, with a circle around it, in the same color scheme. Currently, Tip Top Bakeries is owned by Associated British Foods and employs 3,500 people over 13 bakeries in Australia and New Zealand. On average, they manufacture 1,000,000 baked products every day, and many of their breads are endorsed by the National Heart Foundation of Australia.

The company is best known for its television commercial and packaging slogan of Good on you, Mum. Tip Top’s the One, which was used for 13 years before being replaced with the new slogan, Australia’s Favourite Bread, in December 2010. But the Original Slogan returned in a 2011 campaign. Tip Top Bakeries has a very large product line being sold under numerous brands as shown below.

Overview [2]

During 1975, Tip Top Bakeries issued a 20-card set of Sunblest Space Shot food insert trading cards that were issued with their Sunblest Breads. The cards measure 3.25 × 2.17 inches (82.55 × 55.03 mm).

The fronts of the 1975 Sunblest Space Shot cards feature twenty color artworks. Thirteen of the card fronts feature historic Space Race events, one card (#11) is a Sunblest Bread advertising card, and the remaining six cards are used to form an imaginary Space E.V.A. Event collage. the color artwork is quite pleasing. The first 14 cards all have medium-size white border with the card title centered in the margin directly beneath the artwork. Six cards (17 through 20) are referred to as Clue Cards. The last six cards include the Clue Card No. and the card title. The six card collage that these cards form is shown below.

The backs of the cards are divided into the following four vertical segments:

  1. The top of the card features the Tip Top Bread logo in the upper left-hand corner. Adjacent to the logo, centered on the logo’s right side, in two lines appears the name of the set, SUNBLEST SPACE SHOT. Directly beneath the set title appears the following phrase Collect the Full Set of 20 Sensational Cards!
  2. The line directly beneath the top segment includes the card title (in bold print) on the left and the card number on the right. This is followed by a descriptive text describing the subject of the card. Directly beneath the descriptive text is a bold horizontal separator line.
  3. The next section contains the set title (bolded) with three sets of instructions on how to enter a quiz about the six Clue Cards. It should be noted that there is no mention at all of any prize or gift that is obtained when the answers to the quiz are submitted.
