Overview
During 1940, the Tide Water Associated Oil Company (TYDOL) issued a 48-stamp set of American Aviation
airplane stamps that were issued with TYDOL-VEEDOL Flying A Gasoline purchases. The Albums and Stamps could be secured free from any TYDOL-VEEDOL dealer in the thirteen Northeastern States. The Album and Stamps were not for sale, and it was noted that anyone offering the Album or Stamps for sale were doing so without the authorization of the Tide Water Associated Oil Company. Stamps were available over a period of 16 weeks beginning on May 16, 1940, with a set of three different airplane stamps being issued each week.
Customers were reminded that the completion of their collection was not a difficult task. All they had to do was just to make it a habit to stop each week at their TYDOL-VEEDOL dealer and pick up the current set of three stamps being issued each week.
Request by mail direct to the Tide Water Associated Oil Company, its representatives or dealers were not to be honored. The Stamps were available only upon personal call at any station selling TYDOL FLYING A GASOLINE.
The TYDOL-VEEDOL customers were encouraged to visit their local TYDOL-VEEDOL dealer each week to complete their collection of these fascinating stamps. The accompanying album was broken down into three chapters: (a) The Pioneers, (b) Trail Blazers of the Air, (c) Uncle Sam’s Air Service, and (d) Wings Today and Tomorrow. The Album itself was actually a simplistic introduction to aviation history spanning the time frame of Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine (A.D. 1500) up to the suggested use of rocket powered passenger aircraft. In addition to the various introductions and advertisements, the album contained 48 rectangular boxes for the placement of the individual stamps. Each of the rectangular boxes contain the stamp number, the subject title, and the accomplishment of that particular individual or aircraft. The stamps themselves are typical adhesive blank-backed stamps with separation roulettes on all four sides. A typical stamp is shown below along with the Album cover.
