Whitman's “New Trading Cards” Series
During the 1950s, the Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, was the supplier of trade cards for numerous companies to use as premium insert trade cards. As shown above, the front of the cards contained a borderless color painting of the subject aircraft. The backs of the cards include a brief description of the subject aircraft along with a 3-view drawing (i.e. front view, top view, side view).
For the various series of Aircraft Recognition Cards, this void area beneath the 3-view drawing was used for PRODUCT BRANDING, i.e.: … Carnation … 3-Minute Oats … Hood, and … Oak Manufacturing Company, etc. Airplane Trade Card sets.
Why These “New Trading Cards” Sets?
Most likely Whitman's “New Trading Cards” 12-card packs were a means for Whitman to sell off excess card stock inventory. The “New Trading Cards, Set B” (Aircraft Recognition Cards) envelope shown below identifies the existence of nine New Trading Cards sets … “New Trading Cards, Set A” through “New Trading Cards, Set I.”
We were able to computer enhance two of the “New Trading Cards” sets envelopes, Set B and Set C shown below.
These 2 envelopes show that Whitman was into a wide subject matter variety of trade cards.
