Overview

The “Aeroplanes” series of 50 airplane trading cards was issued by the British American Tobacco Co., Ltd. for distribution in Canada during 1926. The landscape images on the card fronts feature color-artwork of significant military and civil aircraft of the era. Aircraft from Great Britain, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Czecho-Slovak, and the United States of America are included. The card fronts have an imposing golden border surrounding the aircraft artwork. The card titles are included within the artwork image area. This set is a clone of the 1926 Gilt Border “Aeroplane Series” issued by John Player and Sons in the UK. The cards fronts are identical, while the backs are different. The checklists are the same.

The backs of the cards are presented in a “portrait” format. The card backs are printed in dark-grey ink. A rectangular double-lined box includes the following five vertical segments:

  1. Series Title: Aeroplanes
  2. Series Length: A Series of 50 Subjects
  3. Card No.: i.e. “2
  4. Card Title: i.e. The Gloster Gamecock.
  5. Descriptive text.
